Scientific and cultural information about our watershed

Calling all volunteers for Summer 2011 Sampling in Wolf Run Watershed as part of the US EPA 319(h) Watershed Plan Development Process. We are seeking volunteers willing to help with three different types of monitoring:

Grab Sample Collection for laboratory analysis, once a month at selected sites in the watershed
Habitat assessments of stream segments looking at stream side vegitation, in stream features and bank stability
Conductivity survey hiking up the creek with a conductivity meter, GPS unit and camera.

If you are interested in participating, please let us know. We ask that volunteers complete the free Watershed Watch Phase 1 training for Grab Sample Collection and Field Chemistry, Phase 2 training for Habitat Assessment and attend a Quality Assurance Project Plan orientation as part of this project.

McConnell Springs Stormwater Structure Effectiveness Monitoring

Study by LFUCG Division of Water Quality working with LFUCG Parks and Recreation and Friends of Wolf Run evaluating the effectiveness of a new stormwater treatment system including settling basins, and a wetland pond.

Pathogen DNA Source Study Completed in Wolf Run
During Spring Summer 2010 Friends of Wolf Run assisted in collecting over 200 samples from our watershed for LFUCG, UK ERTL and Watershed Watch on "A PLAN FOR IDENTIFYING HOT-SPOTS AND AFFIRMING REMEDIATION IMPACTS ON SURFACE WATER QUALITY: PHASE I"

Samples were analyzed for E. Coli bacteria, Total Coliform and Bacteroides qPCR (DNA) analyses to quantify human sourced E. Coli in the watershed.

Dissolved Oxygen Study on Wolf Run by Brandon Bell, 2009

Purpose: To measure dissolved oxygen levels in Wolf Run Creek during the course of a day, and at the same time of day for two weeks to understand the health of the creek and it's ecosystem

Friends of Wolf Run completed a study with UK Environmental Research and Training Lab and Bluegrass Community and Technical College EST Program on pathogen source identification Study April - June 2008: The group sampled as part of a follow up study funded by the Kentucky Water Resources Institute through the UK ERTL Labs. This will provide follow up monitoring from a project conducted in 2007 Funded by a grant from Kentucky American Water Company)

20 stations in the watershed were sampled for E. Coli and AC/TC Ratios,

5 key sites were sampled for the presence of Somatic Coliphage viruses using EPA method 1601.

UK ERTL will be tested Polymerase chain reaction methods on samples from our watershed to identify genetic material of specific host types of pathogen bacteria.

Goal of the study was to determine sources high pathogen values identified as coming from human sources and to determine what health risks we face in being exposed to known high levels of pathogen bacteria in our urban streams.
